Follow the tips below to reduce the chance of your pipes freezing during extreme weather events, to ensure your continued supply of hot water.
Install a pipe cover on your Rinnai unit.
Power = no power equals no freeze protection. The only thing our Rinnai units require in order to protect themselves is power. (This does not protect the piping of the building.)
Gas is the second line of defense for our non-condensing units. When the temperature drops, our non-condensing units will fire for 3-second spurts to help when it gets colder, although it still requires power.
Set faucets to drip slowly. Water moving makes it harder to freeze.
Protect exposed water pipes with insulation or electrical tape if the unit is outdoors or in a cold area (even if it has a pipe cover). This protects the pipes, not the unit itself.
Cover outdoor spigots.
Seal Cracks and Holes. A windy day will cause more cold air to infiltrate the building.
Close garage doors.
Sometimes, increasing the temperature by a couple of degrees can help if they lose power if they need to wait longer.
Whole house freeze alarm (some units will notify you if something is happening, especially while on vacation).
Knowing the location of the main water shut-off.
Run the hot water side for a couple of minutes to make sure the water does flow and gets hot.
Please refer to your Owners Manual to see instructions on how to drain your water heater, or visit rinnai.us to find a licensed plumber in your area.
